Holiday Programming

Holiday Lighting

Downtown Portland's renowned holiday lighting program makes downtown sparkle during the holiday season, with more than 700 trees within a 70-block area in the retail core lit up. The lighting program also echoes the city’s environmental consciousness, as it is all "green." LED lights are strung on the trees and the electrical power comes from renewable energy sources. The LED lights save more than 80 percent of the energy used and electrical costs incurred with traditional lights.

Additionally, all lights are installed using techniques that are overseen and approved by the Urban Forestry Department to ensure no damage is done to the trees during the process, truly keeping Portland green for years to come.

PDX Pop-Up Shops

PDX Pop-Ups showcase local independent design talent, encouraging shoppers to seek out unique gift offerings downtown during the holiday season. In addition to supporting local talent and emerging retail entrepreneurs, the shops create new jobs, temporarily activate vacant storefronts, improve the pedestrian environment downtown and allow property owners to showcase vacant space for future, permanent tenants. Some Pop-Up Shops experience such success that they are enabled to continue their lease in a downtown storefront, like Crafty Wonderland and Boys Fort.

Project partners include Portland Business Alliance, Portland Development Commission, Downtown Retail Advocate and the Downtown Marketing Initiative. This year will mark the seventh year of the program.
