PORTLAND, Ore. – Downtown Portland businesses now employ more than 100,000 people, a record number for the Central City. The numbers released today are part of the annual Downtown Business Census & Survey, produced by the Clean & Safe District.

According to the report, employment in downtown Portland increased by 3 percent, from 99,031 employees in 2016 to 102,361 employees in 2017, the highest count of jobs measured for this area. Additionally the number of businesses downtown increased a full percent, from 4,958 in 2016 to 5,024 in 2017.
Key findings from the report include:
  • Notable employee increases in Finance and Insurance sectors, up 9 percent from 2016.
  • Notable increases in businesses include Real Estate Rental and Leasing, up 27 percent from 2016.
  • Top factors influencing businesses locating or staying in downtown include: 1) central location; 2) access to public transportation; 3) proximity to other businesses; 4) accessibility; and 5) density of people and atmosphere.
  • More than half of respondents consider downtown “clean” or “very clean,” a notable change in perception from past years, when the “need for cleanliness” had increased. This year, it decreased from 50 in 2016 to 37 percent in 2017.

The Clean & Safe District conducts the Downtown Business Census & Survey each year, surveying employers within the I-405/I-5 loop. The district partners with Prosper Portland on employment data provided by the state of Oregon. Other survey data is collected using mailed questionnaires, personal follow-up and block-by-block canvassing to obtain a statistically significant survey sample. Survey data was gathered from October 2017 to October 2018.
