Downtown Portland kicks off holiday wonderland

New businesses, PDX Pop Up Shops and festive installations welcome customers for the shopping season

Nov 17, 2017

PORTLAND, Ore – On Thursday, Nov. 16, Portland business leaders gathered to kick off the 2017 holiday shopping season. Downtown visitors will soon see the holiday campaign “Downtown Portland Wonderland” come to life in display windows at the downtown Target on SW 10th and Alder. The Campaign features art by local designer Dan Stiles, a past participant of the PDX Pop Up Shop program.

“Who needs the North Pole when you can head to downtown Portland for a festive holiday experience?” said Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler. “You can find something for everyone on your list. Take a minute to enjoy all the holiday lights, visit a fabulous pop-up shop and maybe do some caroling. Major construction projects are temporarily on hold during the holiday season to make getting around easier.”

Noteworthy new openings this year include Portland Food Hall, the new food hall featuring four restaurant outposts; Chris Cosentino’s stylish Jackrabbit in The Duniway hotel; and the hotly anticipated relocation of seafood favorite Roe to the Morgan Building.

New locations have opened downtown for St. Honore Bakery, Afuri Ramen, and Wailhua Shave Ice. In addition to Pendleton’s new location at Park Avenue West, Patagonia has opened a new location on West Burnside, as have Vans and Le Labo in the West End.

“Come explore the best our downtown has to offer during the holidays,” says Downtown Retail Council (DRC) co-chair Courtney Posey, store manager of Nordstrom Downtown Portland. “We can’t wait to share all that’s new with Portlanders and visitors alike!”

Through November and December, retail events and promotions will be updated regularly at DowntownPortland.org and social media accounts. A printed “Downtown Portland Wonderland” map will showcase all of the cultural events, holiday happenings, and the stores and restaurants that downtown visitors should not miss this season. Maps will be available online, at local stores and through Clean & Safe’s Sidewalk Ambassadors. Eagle-eyed visitors will also notice Sasquatch biking and walking around downtown while checking off his holiday gift lists!

PDX Pop Up Shops
PDX Pop Up Shops are back this year for the eighth year, turning Portland’s vacant retail space into temporary destinations for local designers and artists to “set up shop” for the season.
